A whole new approach
For too long business leaders have limited themselves to a narrow-minded view of the world. We rely on our heads to do everything and yet this is only one part of our whole potential range. All human beings have two other key centres, the heart and the hara, that complement the head and provide a more balanced way of working – and this is the secret to a more complete approach to business. Using our head alone is like removing two legs from a three-legged stool.
Why are we so head-oriented?
We habitually repeat what others have taught us. We learned to rely on our heads during our formal education. At school we were encouraged to develop our brains and were rewarded for doing so. Unfortunately, at the same time, we were discouraged from using our heart and our intuition to find answers; we were discouraged from listening to what we know deep down to be true. There is a strong and clear ‘knowing’ in our heart and our gut (or hara) that our teachers turned us away from using. It is time to change this; it is time to start using our heart and hara as well as our head.
The 3 centres
Holistic Business is the approach that engages all three centres – head, heart and hara – for planning and running a business. Successful companies like Apple and Google use this approach. They have not learned it; it is in their nature. We have identified the elements of successful businesses and developed a model of how best to use the three centres at each of three levels – big picture, definition and going live.
Three times as effective
If we only use our heads in business, we will miss out on the impact of engaging the two most powerful centres. If you look at the first level (the Big Picture) you will be able to get a sense of this. We can work out our ambition using our heads but achieving that ambition will depend upon the other two elements – purpose and dream – and they can only be accessed using the other two centres.
The foundation for success comes from knowing why we are in business – knowing our higher purpose. This is the strongest driver of motivation and the focus that pulls people together to make a winning team. The ‘hara’ is our centre of energy and cohesion.
The greatest driver of action is our emotional centre – without emotion we cannot act. Dreams harness our passion. Passion is the expression of shared dreams. Here we enter the world of storytelling and painting pictures. If we tell our story and paint the picture of our desired future, the whole team will share it and act on it.
