Research has shown how important optimism is in business. Optimistic people are successful and vice versa. This might seem obvious because we can all see how it is key to keep your chin up when faced with adversity. This is not to say that misplaced optimism or over-optimism is a good thing as this will simply facilitate a crash later on when everything did not turn out as well as you had hoped – and we all know that hope is not a strategy!
Less obvious is the importance of maintaining your sense of humour in business. Yet I would say this is just as true. So many things can go wrong in life that, if we take everything too seriously, we can become thoroughly depressed. So, seeing the funny side can alleviate the pressure. At least have a wry smile at how things turn out – whether good or bad. Humour can keep a business leader sane. Good humour also makes you (and your brand) attractive – and therefore more likely to win business from your customers. Humour appeals to the heart.
